Ukraine remains at the center of global geopolitical attention, and Donald Trump’s potential victory in the U.S. presidential elections could mark a new chapter in efforts to end the war. Trump’s national security advisor, Mike Waltz, revealed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is ready to work with the new U.S. administration to achieve peace.
Key Aspects of Negotiations: Who, How, and What?
According to Waltz, the Ukrainian president has agreed to discuss ending the conflict. However, three major issues need to be addressed:
- Who will participate in the negotiations? Forming a comprehensive group of stakeholders is crucial to ensure the agreement’s effectiveness.
- How will the process be organized? Mechanisms for holding negotiations must guarantee transparency, fairness, and equality for all parties.
- What will the terms of the agreement be? It remains unclear whether Russia is ready to compromise and whether Ukraine’s demand for territorial integrity will be upheld.
Waltz also warned that the war in Ukraine has become a “meat grinder,” with the potential to escalate into a global conflict.
Trump’s Plan: Freezing the Conflict or Capitulation to Russia?
According to reports from RBC-Ukraine, Trump’s possible approach to Ukraine may include:
- Freezing military activity along the current frontlines, effectively legitimizing occupied territories.
- Temporarily removing Ukraine’s NATO membership bid from the agenda.
For Ukraine, this scenario is unacceptable as it ignores Russia’s aggressive policy and fails to address the restoration of occupied territories. Nevertheless, Kyiv continues to strengthen its defense capabilities, preparing for the possibility of a prolonged conflict, potentially extending beyond 2025.
“A New Sheriff in Town” — Will Trump Be a Catalyst for Peace?
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, in an interview with Politico, emphasized that Trump must quickly end the war in Ukraine to avoid a “Vietnam scenario.” He warned that delaying the conflict’s resolution could turn the war into “Trump’s war,” similar to how the Vietnam War became associated with Richard Nixon in the 1970s.
At the same time, Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington, Oksana Markarova, is preparing to represent Ukraine at Trump’s inauguration. It is expected that she, rather than high-ranking Ukrainian politicians, will handle initial talks with the new administration.
Zelenskyy’s Stance: Cooperation for Genuine Peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his potential return to power, expressing readiness for joint efforts to establish “true peace.” In his evening address, Zelenskyy stated:
“This is an opportunity we must seize. Ukrainians are ready to work with Americans to achieve peace. But this peace must be fair, without concessions to the aggressor.”
While Kyiv hopes for a shift in Washington’s approach, it remains cautious about potential initiatives that could favor the Kremlin.
