French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to request Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine during the Olympic Games. This revelation came during an interview with “1+1 Marathon” host Natalia Mosheichuk.
“Yes, we will make this request,” confirmed the President.
Macron also commented on the anticipated performances of Russian athletes at the Olympics under a neutral flag, emphasizing that “we will collectively monitor their performances very closely to ensure no athlete exploits this situation.”
“I want the message of peace and tolerance to be heard. We want Ukraine to ultimately fully restore its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Conflicts have occurred in the past, including in sports, and we have experienced this before. We are confident that Russia will remain Russia geographically; it is your neighbor, and I don’t believe the Russian people support this regime. Therefore, as we think about the future, we need to differentiate between the Russian people and their leaders,” Macron underscored.
Despite challenges in geopolitical relations, the proposal to halt fighting in Ukraine during the Olympic Games becomes not just France’s suggestion but also a significant step towards peace and conflict resolution. By closely monitoring the performances of Russian athletes at these games, the international community hopes that sports will serve as a platform for cooperation and understanding, regardless of political and territorial differences.
