Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated that Ukraine is now in a better position to begin peace negotiations than it was a few months ago. In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Stubb emphasized that the time is approaching for both sides to engage in talks.

Ukraine’s Current Position on the Global Stage

Stubb pointed out that Ukraine is currently well-equipped and financially supported to maintain its positions. He recalled that the situation in the spring was much more challenging due to the blockage of American aid and difficulties Europe faced in delivering equipment. “There is no Russian breakthrough. Putin thought the West would tire of the war and that he could wait for the American elections, but he was wrong,” Stubb said.

Conditions and Prospects for Negotiations

The Finnish president noted that Ukraine’s primary condition— the withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied territories— cannot be set as a precondition for potential negotiations. At the same time, he stressed that the start of negotiations does not imply the need to make concessions. “Ukraine needs security guarantees, and this is where we can help through bilateral agreements, a possible path to NATO, and of course, to the European Union,” he added.

Context of Russian Aggression

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. Since then, Ukraine has suffered significant losses but has also strengthened its military and gained support from Western countries. Western nations, including the US and EU members, have provided Ukraine with military, financial, and diplomatic support, allowing the country to effectively counter the aggressor.

Putin had anticipated that the West would grow weary and that political changes in the US might shift the dynamics, but these expectations have not materialized. Currently, Russia faces international isolation, strict sanctions, and increasing global pressure. This situation creates favorable conditions for initiating talks on terms that ensure long-term security and sovereignty for Ukraine.

Security Guarantees and European Integration

Security issues are crucial in the context of any negotiations with Russia. Ukraine seeks security guarantees, which can be provided through bilateral agreements with leading countries and through integration into NATO and the EU. The European Union and NATO are prepared to support Ukraine on this path, which is an important factor in strengthening the country’s position on the global stage.

Future Negotiation Prospects

Starting negotiations could be a significant step towards peace, but it should not involve concessions that could jeopardize Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukrainian diplomats and their international partners must work towards creating conditions that ensure a sustainable peace and security guarantees for the country.
