Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has raised concerns about Hungary’s continued membership in the European Union due to significant discrepancies in values. In an interview with Iisalmen Sanomat, Valtonen pointed out that Hungary’s viewpoints do not align with the official stance of the EU and that Hungary should not represent or pretend to represent the EU in its bilateral diplomacy, particularly when Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visits Moscow or Beijing.
Finland’s Stance on Hungary
“Of course, this is a matter for each individual country. However, at some point, it is worth asking whether the European Union is the right group if ideas are so fundamentally different from our shared values,” Valtonen stated. She added that Finland would be sending a message to Hungary about the need to reconsider its EU membership.
Hungary as an Ally of Russia
Hungary has been known as a staunch ally and advocate for Russian interests, which has further complicated EU dynamics. Viktor Orban has repeatedly voiced support for Russia’s aggressive actions, adding tension within the EU.
Hungary Blocks Aid to Ukraine
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has announced that Hungary is blocking financial aid to Ukraine due to the halt in oil transit. “I clearly stated that until this issue is resolved, everyone should forget about paying 6.5 billion euros in compensation for arms supplies from the European Peace Facility,” Szijjártó said. He added that it would be unacceptable to agree to this payment while Ukraine threatens Hungary’s energy security.
Dependence on Russia
Hungary’s failure to diversify its energy supply sources and its ongoing dependence on Russia have faced criticism both domestically and internationally, especially given the numerous war crimes committed by the Russian regime.
Conclusion
The situation with Hungary and its relations with the EU and Russia highlights the complexity of the European political landscape. Finland’s position reflects growing dissatisfaction among EU member states regarding the value and policy differences of certain member countries.
