Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has outlined a comprehensive plan in his column for The Wall Street Journal that could be implemented by presidential candidate Donald Trump if he wins the upcoming election. The plan emphasizes significantly increasing support for Ukraine, which Pompeo believes will pressure Russia to end its aggression.
Pompeo argues that while the Biden administration has engaged in the conflict out of weakness, Trump could restore peace through strength. The former Secretary of State has detailed a series of steps he recommends Trump take to achieve this objective.
Key Components of Pompeo’s Plan:
- Implement Real Sanctions on Russia: This would involve imposing sanctions on American banks linked to the production of Russian energy resources.
- Strengthen NATO: Pompeo suggests compelling NATO members to increase their defense spending to 3% of their GDP, thereby enhancing collective security.
- $500 Billion Lend-Lease Program for Ukraine: This would provide Kyiv with necessary defense resources, similar to the Lend-Lease program used by the U.S. during World War II to assist Britain.
- Lift Restrictions on Arms Deliveries to Ukraine: Removing existing restrictions would force Putin to face rising war costs and diminishing prospects of success.
- Use Frozen Russian Central Bank Assets for Reparations: Pompeo proposes that Ukraine should be able to recover using these assets rather than relying on American taxpayer funds.
Accelerating Ukraine’s NATO and EU Membership
Pompeo also advocates for Ukraine’s expedited accession to NATO, ensuring that European allies assume responsibility for its defense. Additionally, he calls for NATO to establish a $100 billion fund to arm Ukraine and urges the European Union to swiftly accept Ukraine and support its economic modernization.
Should Russia agree to these terms, Pompeo predicts that Western sanctions would be gradually lifted, with full removal occurring once Ukraine joins both NATO and the EU.
Pompeo’s plan aims to end Russia’s aggression and restore stability in the region through decisive actions and strength, which he believes is the only path to a fair peace.
